Buyer’s quick take

20W vs 25W vs 45W — what does it mean?

Wattage is only part of fast charging. The charger, device and cable also need compatible charging standards. iPhones and iPads commonly use USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), while compatible Samsung 25W and 45W Super Fast Charging modes can also depend on PPS (Programmable Power Supply) support.

20W

Everyday phone charging

Enough for many phones and everyday charging. A device that supports more power may simply charge more slowly, and USB-PD support can matter just as much as the headline wattage.

25W

A useful middle ground

A common fast-charging level for modern phones. On compatible Samsung devices, reaching the intended Super Fast Charging mode may require a charger that supports USB-PD PPS.

45W

More charging headroom

Useful for devices designed to accept higher charging rates. For compatible Samsung phones, both PPS support and a suitable cable can be important if you want to reach the phone’s higher charging mode.

Quick tip: Check your device’s supported charging standard and maximum input before choosing purely by wattage. A higher-wattage standards-compliant charger does not automatically force its full output into a lower-power phone.
Wall charger FAQ

Four quick questions before you buy

The right charger depends on both power and compatibility. These are the main points worth checking before buying.

What wattage wall charger do I actually need?

Use your device’s supported charging rate as the starting point. Around 20W–25W is enough for many phones, while 45W is useful only when the device can take advantage of the extra power. The charging protocol and cable can matter as much as the wattage printed on the plug.

Can a higher-wattage charger damage my phone?

A reputable, standards-compliant charger should negotiate power with a compatible phone rather than forcing its maximum output into it. The phone normally takes only the power it is designed to accept. Poor-quality, damaged or non-compliant chargers and cables are a separate safety risk.

What is the difference between USB-C and USB-A chargers?

USB-C is the newer connector and is commonly used with USB Power Delivery for higher-power fast charging. USB-A is still useful for older cables and accessories, but charging speed and supported protocols can be more limited depending on the charger and device.

What safety standards should I check for a UK wall charger?

Choose a charger intended for UK mains from a reputable manufacturer or seller. Look for a properly designed UK three-pin plug, clearly stated electrical ratings, appropriate UK conformity information and built-in protection such as over-current, over-voltage and temperature protection. BS 1363 is the key UK standard for the plug and socket system; avoid poorly documented or obviously non-compliant chargers.
